On May 25, 2013, the members of the "Centesimus Annus - Pro Pontifice" Foundation were received by Pope Francis during their annual international conference. This year's theme was “Rethinking Solidarity for Work: Challenges of the 21st Century”. The Foundation was established 20 years ago by Blessed John Paul II in the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Encyclical Rerum Novarum. In his address to the participants, Pope Francis reiterated that the world’s current crisis is not just economic or financial but rooted in an ethical and anthropological crisis. “Chasing the idols of power, profit, and money over and above the value of the human person has become a basic rule of operation and a decisive criterion of organization,” he said, and went on to emphasize “there is no worse material poverty … than that which deprives someone of earning their living, deprives them of the dignity of work.”
