viacrucis2018-12 stazioneThis year again, Pope Francis will lead the Way of the Cross in Rome's centuries-old Colosseum where many early Christians were martyred. The meditations for the 2018 Way of the Cross (Via Crucis or Via Dolorosa) were prepared by a group of 15 young Italian students coordinated by Ms. Andrea Monda, a religion teacher who is also a journalist. The Way of the Cross will be prayed in the Colosseum on 30 March 2018 at 7:15 p.m. (Rome time), and broadcast live on Salt + Light TV. The Holy Father requested that the meditations on the Passion of Christ this year originate with a younger generation, especially as preparations are underway for the Synod of Bishops on Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment that will take place in Rome during October 2018.

The Commissariat of the Holy Land in Canada also offers resources for the Way of the Cross on its web site. This is intended to help unite Canadians in prayer with their Christian brothers and sisters in the Holy Land and throughout the Middle East. For centuries, the Via Crucis has been part of every Christian's pilgrimage to the Holy Land and is a central part of the Holy Week services that commemorate the Passion of the Lord. Franciscans have been present in the Holy Land since the time of their founder, Saint Francis of Assisi, and have served as the Church's official custodians of the holy places there since being appointed to this special ministry by Pope Clement VI in 1342.
